Dave Mustaine Says Hand Condition Played Part in Megadeth's Farewell Plans
"During a YouTube interview with MariskalRockTV, Mustaine described the condition - once known as Viking Disease - which causes one or more fingers to bend toward the palm of the hand, resulting in the affected fingers not straightening completely. It usually begins as small, hard nodules under the skin of the palm."
""It's gonna make my finger come down like this," he said, showing the interviewer how the condition affects him. "It's already started, where it's kind of bunching up a little bit. And then if you look at the tips of my fingers, they're severely arthritic. So all those bumps makes it really painful to play.""
Dave Mustaine has Dupuytren's contracture, a hand condition that causes one or more fingers to bend toward the palm and prevents full straightening. The condition often begins as small, hard nodules under the skin of the palm and has progressed alongside severe arthritis in his fingertips, making playing painful. Surgery is planned to halt the condition's progress, but the procedure will occur after Megadeth completes a farewell tour that could last three to five years. Farewell dates start in February with a Canada headline run, and the band will support Iron Maiden in late summer. A theatrical event titled Megadeth: Behind the Mask will accompany the final album release on the night before the album's release.
