Daron Malakian: System of a Down's Potential Replacement for Serj Tankian "Sounded Good," But It Felt Wrong
Briefly

System of a Down considered a new singer after Serj Tankian expressed a desire to step back from touring. Daron Malakian revealed the potential vocalist sounded good but emphasized that it didn't feel like System of a Down without Tankian. Malakian was against finding another singer, stating, "For me, System of a Down is us four." He clarified that while they did audition someone, it wasn't deeply pursued, and ultimately, the dynamics of the band were more important than simply finding a replacement.
Malakian stated, "It was something that I never really wanted to do. For me, System of a Down is us four. If one of us four isn't doing System of a Down, I don't really wanna do System of a Down."
Malakian said, "We tried, and whoever we tried, he sounded good. But did we really pursue it deeply? No."
Malakian emphasized, "I don't wanna look to my left and see other people. System is System, and if that's not gonna be System, then I don't know if that's the System I wanna be a part of."
He clarified, "So yeah, I'm not interested or really kind of never was interested [in having a different singer in System of a Down]."
