"We were pretty stoked to make another album after the success of our previous album and its single 'Pepper'. Capitol Records was stoked to get that next record until our relationship soured. Hollywood Records bought the album but wanted to make changes to it which was an uncomfortable experience for us. Now we have the right to release the original recording the way we intended it to be with its original title, After The Astronaut."
"After the Astronaut was a fun project. We were using all the digital toys at our disposal at the time, and it felt much like the creation of Locust Abortion. We were playing with new toys, creating things that amused us with the crayons we had, and we weren't worried about radio airplay. It felt like we were going back to our experimental roots while still navigating the major label ecosystem."
Butthole Surfers will release After the Astronaut, a previously unreleased album originally intended as the follow-up to their 1996 hit Electriclarryland. Capitol Records shelved the project after the band's relationship with the label deteriorated. The album was later purchased by Hollywood Records (Disney-owned), which released a reworked version as 2001's Weird Revolution. The band now has rights to release the original recording as intended. Guitarist Paul Leary and drummer King Coffey describe the album as experimental, created with digital technology available at the time, reflecting the band's return to experimental roots while navigating major label constraints. The single "Jet Fighter" showcases the original version's folk-rock style.
