"Britney Spears has sold the rights to her music catalog, which includes hits such as Toxic, Baby One More Time and Gimme More, according to media reports. The music publisher Primary Wave is said to have purchased the pop star's music rights on 30 December, TMZ reported on Tuesday, citing legal documents. An unnamed source familiar with the deal confirmed the sale to the New York Times."
"The 44-year-old spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship that required her to pay attorneys to manage her life and did not allow her to make decisions about her personal affairs, career or finances. A judge terminated the legal arrangement in 2021. She recounted how the conservatorship shaped her life, controlling decisions about her diet and family planning, and stripped me of my womanhood [and] made me into a child in a 2023 memoir The Woman in Me."
Britney Spears sold the rights to her music catalog, including hits such as 'Toxic', 'Baby One More Time' and 'Gimme More.' The music publisher Primary Wave purchased the music rights on 30 December. The terms and price of the sale were not made public. High-profile artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Shakira, Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake have sold catalogs in recent years. Springsteen sold his songs to Sony in 2021 for $500m, and Sony purchased Queen's catalog for more than $1bn in 2024. Spears has released nine studio albums since 1999 and is one of the bestselling female artists. She spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship that was terminated by a judge in 2021 and wrote that it "stripped me of my womanhood [and] made me into a child" in a 2023 memoir. Spears has not publicly commented on the sale and has said she has no plans to return to the music industry or perform in the US.
