Bar Italia, London's Most Mysterious Band
"Very rarely do we ask each other why we wrote something,"
"We respect each other's privacy when it comes to poetry and lyricism, and it creates this conversation for the listener."
"We don't like telling each other what our songs are about because we believe other people's interpretations are just as valid as our intentions. Plus, I think we all enjoy the mystery."
"The more you play shows, you have a much clearer instinct of what is going to work live,"
Bar Italia formed in late 2019 and cultivated a deliberate mystique while releasing music on World Music before signing to Matador Records. Band members preserve privacy around songwriting and lyrics, rarely interrogating each other's intentions and encouraging listener interpretation. The group wrote Some Like It Hot between tours, selecting tracks from over 40 songs with emphasis on material that succeeds in live settings. The record emphasises loose melodicism and intersecting perspectives that symbolise lost connections. Live experience sharpened instincts about what works onstage, leading to more direct arrangements and clearer mixes to avoid sonic clutter.
