Aqua, the Danish electro-dance group behind “Barbie Girl,” is ending its career as a live band after more than three decades. The group announced the decision on Instagram, saying it is time to close the chapter while memories remain strong and the love for the music, story, and each other continues. Aqua formed in 1995 and released the 1997 album Aquarium, which launched “Barbie Girl” with an uptempo dance beat and cheeky lyrics. A lawsuit by Mattel over the song was dismissed as fair parody. Aqua later released Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania in 2011, selling an estimated 33 million records and singles. Their relevance returned in 2023 when “Barbie Girl” was sampled for “Barbie World” for the Barbie film soundtrack.
"After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band."
"AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we've had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of. We've traveled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever."
"When you've been together for this long, you also learn when it's time to protect what you've created together. Now feels like the right moment to say goodbye while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact."
"Aqua formed in 1995 and their 1997 album Aquarium unleashed “Barbie Girl” unto the world with its uptempo dance beat and cheeky lyrics about the titular doll and her paramour Ken. Mattel, makers of Barbie, sued the group, but a judge dismissed the case finding the song was fair parody."
