"I realized this is what I'm going to write about, this is what I feel, this is what I live right now. It's a war in my country. I felt that instrumental music maybe could deliver a message that words cannot."
"This music is my way to process the situation ... But it's also my way to help and support my home country in any way I can. This is not a big amo[unt]."
"He titled the 11-movement suite Perseverantia, after the Latin term for perseverance—something that 'is the sound of war, but also is the sound of empathy and hope.' He released a recording of it on Feb. 24 to mark the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion."
Vadim Neselovskyi, a pianist-composer, was initially unable to play after witnessing Russia's full-scale assault on Ukraine four years ago. Three weeks later, he returned to the piano and created brutal, repetitive chords that became the foundation for "Tanks Near Kyiv," the second movement of an 11-part suite titled Perseverantia. The suite blends classical and jazz elements, featuring movements that reflect on loss while imagining Ukraine's future without Russian military presence. Neselovskyi believes instrumental music can convey messages that words cannot. He released a recording on February 24 to commemorate the invasion's fourth anniversary, performed with the Netherlands-based Ysaye String Trio. Through benefit concerts, he has raised over $200,000 for Ukraine.
