The American tech giant showcased the new auto-adapting feature on a round Mini screen, the irregular display of a Lucid Air, and the BMW iX3's trapezoidal center touchscreen. On all of them, Google Maps was an edge-to-edge app, while the virtual buttons were constrained in a borderless rectangle."

Android Auto is being updated to automatically match the shape of a car’s screen, removing black borders on round, trapezoidal, and irregular displays. Google Maps will run edge-to-edge across the display, while virtual buttons remain inside a borderless rectangle. Widgets can be pinned on top of Google Maps to access music, a garage opener, or calendars without switching apps, with one or two widget rows depending on screen size while keeping active navigation visible. The experience is built around Google Maps’ Immersive Navigation, featuring a redesigned 3D view with real-time highlights for lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs. Supported cars will also receive high-definition video playback from a smartphone at up to 60 frames per second, with video shown only when the car is parked.
