Yakhyaev had previously earned his UFC contract on Dana White's Contender Series with another quick stoppage. Cerqueria entered the bout having won three straight fights and faced pressure in Doha. Yakhyaev initiated action with a spinning wheel kick, followed by punches and a roundhouse that dropped Cerqueria, then took his back and secured the choke. Yakhyaev said the plan was to pursue either a very quick finish or end the fight by the close of the opening round.
