Ronda Rousey rips UFC pay, says fighters are living at 'poverty level'
"I knew that we could promote this on our own and probably be the most lucrative way to go about it for us, but I have such love and respect for Dana that I wanted to bring this to him first. I said, 'I know I can do this on my own, but I would rather fight for you than to fight for me, just make it make sense for me.'"
"It was meant to be. It was meant to push us onto the other side and once they moved into the streaming model, it's just not about putting on the best fights possible anymore. Rousey echoes complaints lodged by many in the MMA community recently: That the UFC has less incentive to put on the best fights possible thanks to guaranteed money from Paramount."
Ronda Rousey planned to return to MMA under the UFC for a bout with Gina Carano, originally scheduled for December as the final pay-per-view event under ESPN's deal. When Carano needed more time to prepare and the UFC transitioned to a streaming model with Paramount, the fight relocated to Netflix through Most Valuable Promotions. Rousey expressed respect for UFC leadership but noted the new streaming arrangement removed incentives for promoting the best fights. She also highlighted financial struggles for MMA athletes, pointing out that while post-fight bonuses increased to $100,000, base fight purses remained unchanged.
