Marcus McGhee expressed surprise at being offered a fight with Petr Yan at UFC Abu Dhabi, noting his ranking and current winning streak. He emphasized the unpredictability of MMA and his excitement for the opportunity. Both fighters were eager to compete, having not fought since November, which contributed to the matchup occurring. McGhee has a history of training for Yan’s fight against his teammate, Sean O'Malley, and has been a long-time fan of Yan, eager to see how his skills match up against him.
"How can you not be surprised? Honestly anything can happen in this game so there's not too many times you are surprised," McGhee told reporters on Wednesday.
"When you're #13, even when you're winning like I am, it was definitely surprising. Super stoked for the opportunity," McGhee expressed.
"I think that both of us were eager to compete and both of us haven't fought since November. So we're like 'hey man we're not trying to let the summer go by,'" McGhee noted.
"I've been looking at Petr Yan, been a fan of Petr Yan, for a long time," said McGhee, expressing excitement about the matchup.
