Jayden Daniels, an Arizona State transfer, arrived at LSU's indoor practice facility in March 2022 appearing unassuming and out of place. Coaches believed he could be special, but players reacted with disbelief at his lack of polish. His official bio listed him at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, but he seemed shorter and lighter. He wore a low-hanging backpack, messy hair, glasses, and cross-referenced a printed class schedule with his phone. Teammates and staff ribbed him; Malik Nabers called him a "weird nerd" and an assistant coach told him he looked like a "bum." Much of the teasing was good-natured, though some served as a toughness test rooted in LSU culture.
