After unsuccessful negotiations for high-profile fights with Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis, Jake Paul has opted to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28. This matchup follows Paul's notable victory over 58-year-old Mike Tyson. Despite Chavez's recent struggles in the ring and personal issues, his background as a former champion gives Paul a notable opponent, although some view it as yet another match against an aging fighter. This fight marks an important step in Paul’s boxing career, highlighting the balance of showmanship and competitive progression.
"I just defeated the baddest man on the planet, and now I'm going against a former champion who conman Canelo couldn't finish," said Paul in a statement to ESPN on Friday.
Although Chavez is 8-6 since 2012, he still carries name value as the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez and a step up in competition for Paul given his boxing pedigree.
