On May 2, the Santa Clara Chorale and San Jose Chamber Orchestra will commemorate the centennial of Bay Area composer Kirke Mechem at Mission Santa Clara. The concert will feature works by Mechem, including his well-known first opera "Tartuffe" and his choral suite "Birthdays: Round Numbers," which celebrates the ages from 10 to 70. The event will also include performances by Santa Clara University Chamber Singers and other vocal ensembles. Tickets range from $8 to $50, with free admission for those under 18.

Mechem, a former Stanford music professor whose 100th birthday is Aug. 16, is known for his first opera, "Tartuffe." He is currently working on an operatic adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."
