In 2009, inspired by a question from Oprah, Lisa Truong and her friend launched a Mother's Day diaper drive that grew into Help a Mother Out, a nonprofit addressing a critical need for diapers among new mothers in California. They quickly recognized a significant policy gap when diapers were found to be unsupported by WIC or food stamps, prompting their advocacy for change. Over 15 years, the organization has distributed over 66 million diapers, created a citywide diaper bank, and influenced public funding models, all driven by a belief in community interconnectedness and empowerment.
"The concept was simple, but radical—help new moms with the one thing no one was talking about: diapers."
"We are so interconnected... If we can strengthen our most vulnerable, we make the whole region stronger."
"It's about lifting each other up, not just handing out help."
