La 'Muerte de la Mision,' market-rate high-rise on site of lethal fire, OK'd by Planning Commission
Briefly

On Thursday, the Planning Commission approved a contentious 91 percent market rate housing project in the Mission District, much to the dismay of local activists. The project includes 181 units, with only 19 designated as affordable housing, raising concerns about gentrification and displacement in an area already struggling with these issues. The approval marks a significant moment as the site was previously home to a building that was destroyed by a fire over a decade ago, displacing numerous residents and businesses. Activists argue that the project favors wealthy tenants and exacerbates existing inequalities.
"90 percent of the units are for high-income earners, deepening existing disparity in access to sufficient housing available to protected classes already living in overcrowded conditions or on the streets," said Larissa Pedroncelli, an activist with United to Save the Mission.
The approval comes just over a decade after a fire destroyed the building, displacing nearly 60 residents and 26 businesses - including Mission Local.
