Cinderella Bakery, a well-known Russian bakery based in the Richmond District for over 70 years, is finally set to open in the Mission District by the end of 2023. Co-owner Mike Fishman expressed excitement about serving the community, but the transition has been complex, having faced resistance from local activists after purchasing the space vacated by La Victoria Bakery. The location's history has fueled concern as La Victoria was a cherished neighborhood institution for nearly seven decades before its closure in 2018, leading to various community tensions regarding the change in culinary focus.
Nearly six years after Mission Local first reported that the Richmond District's Cinderella Bakery intended to open up in the vacated La Victoria Bakery spot in the Mission District, the Russian bakery will finally start serving its piroshkis, borscht and pelmenis: Cinderella will open on 24th Street by the end of the year, according to its owner.
Mike Fishman, who co-owns Cinderella Bakery with his wife, Marika Fishman, expressed excitement about becoming part of the community, stating, 'We're very excited to be part of the community.'
The road from the Richmond District to the Mission proved far more complex than a 20-minute bus ride on the 33-line, however. In November 2018, Fishman bought the building at 2937 24th St. for about $3 million.
Fishman's intention to replace Mexican baked goods with Russian pastries was met with resistance from some Mission activists, who demanded the new owner let La Victoria return to its home of 68 years.
