Ukraine agreed to trade its NATO bid for bilateral Western security guarantees, including Article 5-like assurances from the United States and guarantees from European partners as well as countries such as Canada and Japan. Zelensky described the move as a compromise aimed at preventing renewed Russian aggression. Russian President Vladimir Putin has long cited NATO ambitions as a justification for the 2022 invasion.
