X blocks EU Commission's advertising account after 120 million fine | Euractiv
"Bier accused the Commission of using the account to post links that misled users into thinking they were videos, artificially boosting their reach. For this reason, the account was blocked, though the Commission's main X account remains active. The move has been widely seen as retaliation for the €120 million fine imposed by the EU executive on Thursday for breaching transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA)."
"The social media platform X announced it had banned the European Commission's 'ads account' over alleged policy breaches, just days after the Commission fined X €120 million for violating transparency rules. "Your ad account has been terminated," said Nikita Bier, X's head of product, on Sunday. The 'Ads account' is an additional account linked to a main account, that is designed to run advertising campaigns."
"The penalty, the first ever issued under the EU's online governance law, prompted a harsh reaction from US Vice President JD Vance on Friday, as well as a public lament from X's owner, Elon Musk. Over the weekend, the billionaire launched a tirade on the platform, denouncing the EU as a "tyrannical, unelected bureaucracy oppressing the people" and calling for its abolition. The US administration also criticised the EU initiative harshly."
X banned the European Commission's ads account, accusing it of posting links that misled users into thinking they were videos and artificially boosting reach. The Commission's main X account remains active despite the ads account termination. The ban came days after the EU fined X €120 million for breaching transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act. The fine prompted strong reactions from US figures including Vice President JD Vance and X owner Elon Musk, who denounced the EU. The US Ambassador to the EU described the fine as excessive regulatory overreach. The European Commission has not commented.
