Working asylum seekers to pay up to 40pc of weekly income towards accommodation costs under new plan
"a modest enough overhaul, but an important one"
"It's fair and it's robust and it's also aligning with what's happening elsewhere,"
"Mr Martin said Ireland has always taken a "humanitarian approach", but there is "a necessary tightening" required of the asylum and citizenship processes."
"They did come before the party leaders and also before the Cabinet subcommittee. So we've discussed these in relative detail, but we will work through these as the legislation comes in."
A proposed immigration reform would require asylum seekers to pay a weekly contribution based on income: €15 for incomes up to €150, €83 for incomes up to €340, and €238 for incomes of €600 or more. The model could be operational by next year if approved by Cabinet ministers. The proposal has been advanced by Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan and junior minister for migration Colm Brophy. Two additional measures would tighten family reunification rules and extend the residency requirement for citizenship from three years to five years. The changes are presented as modest, fair, robust, aligned with other jurisdictions, and intended to tighten processes while retaining humanitarian principles.
