Where will jobs be lost in Austria in 2026?
"Austria is expected to create thousands of new jobs in 2026, but that does not mean the labour market will be painless. While healthcare, public services and green industries continue to expand, several sectors are heading in the opposite direction. From media to parts of the automotive supply chain, job losses are already underway and are set to continue into 2026. In many cases, this is less about sudden collapse and more about long-term structural change, digitalisation, cost pressure and shifting global markets."
"The cuts are part of a broader cost-saving programme that will run until at least 2029. The broadcaster faces strict limits on its main source of income, the ORF household fee, which is capped at 15.30 per month. At the same time, ORF is legally required to continue funding channels such as ORF III, ORF Sport Plus and the Radio Symphony Orchestra."
A strong net increase in jobs is expected in Austria in 2026, but the labour market will remain uneven. Healthcare, public services and green industries continue to expand, creating new positions. Media and parts of the automotive supply chain are already shedding jobs and will see further reductions next year. Many cuts stem from long-term structural change, digitalisation, cost pressure and shifting global markets rather than sudden collapse. ORF will not refill 50 positions as part of a multi-year cost-saving programme constrained by a capped household fee. Major suppliers such as AVL List and Hella have announced several hundred job reductions.
