What your music says about your political views, revealed
"'These are broad associations,' explained Professor Catherine Ouellet, lead author of the study."
"'But they corroborate the findings of similar U.S. studies. The point is that there are apparently non-political variables that can be indicative of deeper political predispositions.'"
Scientists from the University of Montreal surveyed 125,000 Canadians about musical genre preferences, voting tendencies, personality traits, and social class during the 2021 federal and 2022 Quebec provincial elections. The analysis found clear associations between musical taste, political views and personality traits, while social class showed no meaningful link. Conservative voters were more likely to prefer country and metal and were least likely to enjoy electronic music or folk rock. Left-wing voters tended to prefer folk music. Statistical models showed that listening to metal was a strong predictor of Conservative voting, comparable to variables such as gender and age.
