Weather tracker: thunderstorms and heavy rain hit the Iberian peninsula
"Severe thunderstorms developed across the Iberian peninsula on Wednesday, with Aemet, the Spanish meteorological service, issuing an orange weather warning across much of the country. These thunderstorms were triggered by a cold front passing eastward across Iberia, due to a deep area of low pressure situated just to the north-west of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean, which at its lowest had a central pressure of 989hPa."
"Heavy rain was seen across Iberia, with over 30mm of rain falling in just 24 hours across Galicia, where more localised totals reached 60mm, leading to some surface flooding. Parts of Castilla y Leon also saw high totals, with the town of Caceres seeing 50mm in 24 hours, with flooding making roads impassable. Additionally, there were reports of large hail, notably in southern Spain, where a 6cm hailstone was spotted in Cadiz, Andalucia."
A deep Atlantic low and an eastward-moving cold front produced severe thunderstorms across the Iberian peninsula, prompting orange warnings from Aemet. Heavy rainfall produced over 30mm in 24 hours across Galicia with localised totals near 60mm and surface flooding; Caceres saw 50mm and impassable roads. Large hail occurred in southern Spain, including a 6cm hailstone in Cadiz. Strong gusts reached 55–65mph widely, with one 99mph gust reported in Ouria, Asturias. Elsewhere, Skiathos, Greece, received over 60mm from an upper-air cut-off low. Typhoon Kalmaegi formed 31 October, hit the Philippines with ~80mph winds, caused flash flooding, 188 confirmed affected and 500,000 displaced.
