'We just accepted it' - Irish-American couple defy Storm Amy flooding to get married on rural Cork island
"The rain came off the mountains. By the time of the wedding, the island was flooded. It was under two feet of water,"
"Fr Sean O'Sullivan went up to the couple and said: 'Lads we are in trouble.' Because all of the paperwork is signed and ready to go - it does need to be signed on the island of Gougane."
"I had to venture out onto what was once an island but was now a lake. I was able to venture out with small plastic bags but they were too small so Fr Sean gave me two refuse bags to put on my legs."
"The weird thing is that there was a strange sense of calm. Everyone did their bit. Neil Lucey in Gougane Barra Hotel was a saint with his four by four. The priest and the couple were fantastic."
Heavy rain from Storm Amy submerged the island at Gougane Barra, leaving it under about two feet of water during a wedding. Paperwork required signing on the island, so a priest, hotel manager and family used a four-by-four jeep for multiple crossings to complete a quick ceremony. A photographer waded onto the flooded island using refuse bags over his legs to capture a doorway photograph of the couple. A harpist's large instrument had to be lifted on and off the island. Calm, coordinated efforts prevented the couple and guests from becoming stranded.
