Greenland prefers to remain part of Denmark rather than become part of the United States amid renewed US interest in taking over the island. The preference for Denmark reflects concerns about sovereignty, identity, language and culture. The governing coalition in Greenland rejects any US takeover under any circumstance and affirms that defence of Greenland must be through NATO as part of the Danish commonwealth. US President Donald Trump has insisted the territory could be brought under US control, creating a geopolitical crisis and prompting outrage from European allies. A majority of Greenland's population does not want US citizenship and opposes any sale of the island.
