We are Europeans': fans fly Greenland flag during Olympic US-Denmark ice hockey game
"Vita Kalnina and her husband, Alexander Kalnins, fans of the Latvian hockey team who live in Germany, held up a large Greenland flag during warmups and again when the Danish team scored the opening goal of the preliminary round game against the US at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. We are Europeans and I think as Europeans we must hold together, Kalnins told the Associated Press."
"Donald Trump's rhetoric in recent weeks about taking control of Greenland has stirred up national pride in Denmark. The red-and-white Greenland flag known as the Erfalasorput is not flown in an official capacity at the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee only recognizes independent sovereign states, and Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Through the first week of the Milano Cortina Olympics, fans have brought the flag to different corners of the Games."
Two European fans raised a Greenland flag during warmups and when Denmark scored in the US–Denmark men's Olympic hockey preliminary game. The fans, Vita Kalnina and Alexander Kalnins, are Latvian team supporters living in Germany and said the gesture showed European solidarity with Greenland and Denmark. The Greenland flag, Erfalasorput, is not officially recognized at the Olympics because the IOC recognizes only sovereign states; Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Fans have brought the flag to several venues, including Anterselva, where Greenland's two athletes competed in biathlon. The United States won the hockey game 6-3.
