Members of the Sanctuary Runners formed a guard of honour outside the gates of the official residence in cold weather to show appreciation for President Higgins' support. The running group includes Irish citizens, migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Monika Pumpkin, originally from Botswana, presented roses to Mr Higgins and Sabina and said he supported the group and all migrants in Ireland. Mr Higgins arrived late after ringing the peace bell and thanked the runners before departing, wishing Ms Pumpkin health and happiness. Mr Higgins described serving as president as a great privilege and thanked the people of Ireland for their warmth. His 14-year term ends at midnight and Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated tomorrow. Bernese Mountain dogs and owners also gathered to bid farewell.
