Under Pressure: Uber's Navigation System Endangers the Public With Reckless Driving Directions - Streetsblog New York City
"Make a U-turn to stay on Richmond Terrace, then pick up Ariane."
"[Uber] feeds an illegal routing instruction to both passenger and driver to cut corners and get the driver to the passenger faster, because that's how Uber wins,"
"[Uber] is trying to [say] everything was [the driver's] choice and his judgment as to what to do and how to do it. But in fact, [Uber] has set up this game of driver versus passenger, where Uber always wins."
"'I did it because my Uber said to'"
An Uber navigation prompt instructed driver Kinley Ragbey to make an illegal U-turn on Staten Island. Ragbey followed the app's directions and struck John Tsang, an electric-scooter rider, launching him into a parked car and causing multiple fractured vertebrae that required surgeries. Tsang has sued Ragbey and Uber for damages. Attorney Steve Vaccaro contends Uber provides illegal routing to speed pickups and pressures drivers and passengers via in-app visuals. Drivers feel compelled to follow the navigation because passengers track arrivals in real time. Uber declined to comment on litigation and said it takes road safety seriously.
