Ukrainian troops tell us how they survive brutal temperatures for weeks out in the trenches
""It's really, really cold in Ukraine,""
""I think, the first winter in some time with such cold weather.""
""You put this warmer against your body, and your blood circulating is warm. It works, not bad,""
""If you want to rest a little bit, you take a chemical warmer, a sleeping bag, and it's faster.""
A severe cold snap brought temperatures as low as -6°F to parts of Ukraine, including frontline areas near Kharkiv. Frostbite can set in within 30 minutes in those conditions, making constant warming measures essential. Infantry in trench positions use chemical body warmers placed under clothing for hours of heat; one warmer typically lasts six to eight hours, requiring at least three per soldier per day. Crews experimented with electric warmers but found the larger thermal signatures increase detectability by drones and thermal optics. Chemical warmers emit minimal heat signature and help maintain concealment during rest and rotation.
