"The battle for Pokrovsk has been the subject of military reports for days. For Ukrainian troops, the entrenched fighting on this stretch of the front line is critical. Twenty-one months after the Russian invasion of Avdiivka, a suburb of Donetsk, Pokrovsk could now be taken by Russian troops as another logistical hub, which would be crucial for control of Ukraine's Donetsk region."
"Marina Miron, an honorary researcher at the Centre for Military Ethics and the Department of Defence Studies at King's College London, told DW that the the main problem for Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk is the Russia's blocking of key logistics. "Ukrainian troops are being supplied by drones, both aerial and ground drones, because the situation is very dangerous," Miron said. "If you cannot supply the troops or evacuate casualties, it's like a ticking time bomb.""
Pokrovsk has become a critical, entrenched frontline city where intense urban fighting has raged for over a year, with recent clashes spreading into streets. Capture of the city would give Russian forces a logistical hub crucial for control of Donetsk region. Pre‑war population was about 60,000; by summer 2025 roughly 1,500 residents remained. Russian sabotage groups are advancing into northwestern and northern districts while troop strength in the city has reportedly increased by an estimated 200–300 soldiers or more. Ukrainian forces face blocked supply routes, rely on aerial and ground drones for resupply, and struggle to evacuate casualties, creating an acute tactical and humanitarian risk.
