Cyprus began a six-month presidency of the European Union and hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Nicosia. President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed Zelenskyy at the presidential palace and pledged to make Ukraine a central priority of the presidency. Zelenskyy expressed hope that steps would be taken for closer EU membership and discussed Paris talks on security guarantees contingent on a ceasefire with Russia. Cyprus has historic political and cultural ties to Moscow but supported sanctions against Russia over the invasion. Cyprus compared Ukraine's situation to its own 1974 invasion and ongoing occupation and committed to ensuring continued EU support.
