European leaders held a conference call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in which French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz conveyed sharp warnings about potential US conduct in negotiations with Russia. Macron warned of the possibility that the United States might betray Ukraine on territorial questions absent clear security guarantees. Merz urged Zelenskyy to be extremely careful in the coming days and suggested the US was playing games with both Ukraine and European allies. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede territory in the east occupied by Moscow. The German Chancellery refused to comment, and a Ukrainian communications adviser said they do not comment on provocations.
