Ukraine updates: Geneva peace talks end abruptly
"The Ukrainian side said talks were "difficult" while the chief Russian negotiator said further talks would follow."
"The main point of contention is a Russian demand that Ukraine give up territory that its forces control in the eastern Donetsk region."
"Ukraine has called on its Western partners, particularly the United States, to provide security guarantees to deter a future Russian invasion. Moscow, however, has insisted that any security guarantees exclude Western troops in Ukraine."
Negotiations in Geneva between Ukraine and Russia resumed for a second day but ended after approximately two hours without an agreement. Positions remained sharply divided, with Russia demanding that Ukraine relinquish territory its forces control in eastern Donetsk and Kyiv rejecting that demand. Russian forces control about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea and areas held by Moscow-backed separatists before 2022. Ukraine seeks security guarantees from Western partners, notably the United States, while Russia insists such guarantees must exclude Western troops. The status of the Zaporizhzhia region remains unresolved.
