Ukraine skeleton racer Heraskevych disqualified from Olympics over memorial helmet
"Having been given one final opportunity, skeleton pilot Vladylsav Heraskevych from Ukraine will not be able to start his race at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games this morning,"
"The decision followed his refusal to comply with the IOC's Guidelines on Athlete Expression. It was taken by the jury of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) based on the fact that the helmet he intended to wear was not compliant with the rules."
"make an exception"
The International Olympic Committee barred Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych from competing at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games after he refused to remove a helmet that displayed images of Ukrainian sportspeople killed since Russia's 2022 invasion. The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation jury ruled the helmet non-compliant with competition rules and enforced the decision. The IOC offered a one-time accommodation to allow a plain black armband during competition and affirmed that athletes may express views in press conferences and on social media. IOC President Kirsty Coventry spoke with Heraskevych but he declined to change his position. Heraskevych previously displayed a "No War in Ukraine" banner at the Beijing Olympics.
