Ukraine Pounds Russia's Major Oil Refinery, As Russian Strikes Leave Kharkiv Residents In Dark
"Ukraine said it pounded several Russian refining operations as Kyiv intensifies its attacks on the country's energy infrastructure, which appear to be causing fuel shortages and price increases. The Salavat petrochemical complex, one of Russia's largest and located in the Bashkortostan region, was attacked by Ukrainian drones early on September 24, as well as strikes on Russian oil distribution facilities in the Bryansk and Samara regions."
"Regional Governor Radiy Khabirov said Ukrainian drones targeted Salavat, controlled by Russian energy giant Gazprom. A source from Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) confirmed to RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service that its drones carried out the attack. User-generated photos and videos circulating on Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels showed a huge column of black smoke rising from the facility. "All emergency services are on site. We are taking measures to extinguish the fire," Khabirov wrote in a Telegram post early on September 24."
Ukrainian forces targeted multiple Russian refining and oil-distribution facilities, including the Salavat petrochemical complex in Bashkortostan, using drones on September 24. The strikes produced large fires and visible columns of black smoke, and regional officials and the SBU confirmed drone involvement while emergency services worked to extinguish the blaze. Salavat produces 150 products including gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen, and polyethylene, and sits roughly 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine's front lines. The attacks have coincided with reduced Russian refining capacity, growing shortages of some fuel grades, price increases, and near-empty gas stations in annexed Crimea.
