""According to my observations, infiltration is the main problem. It's very difficult to determine who's the enemy and who's a civilian," said the reconnaissance officer, who is deployed in the region with his Ukrainian unit. He told DW that the Russian troops were advancing on Pokrovsk with a large number of drones and glide bombs. Using drones, they were setting up ambushes, hampering logistics of the Ukrainian forces and destroying any cover with their bombs."
"Ukraine's military currently believes that Russia's army in Pokrovsk has a double advantage, both in terms of numbers and air supremacy. Ukraine was currently unable to counter the multitude of Russian drones. "Because of the drones, we cannot move our air defenses closer to the frontline. Otherwise, this expensive equipment would be destroyed. And we don't have a sufficient number of aircraft ourselves to shoot down Russia's Suchoi bombers," one interviewee told DW."
Pokrovsk in Donetsk is a frontline hotspot with heavy urban street fighting after more than a year of conflict. Russian forces infiltrate the city gradually, entering individually or in pairs, hiding for months and often posing as civilians. Russian use of large numbers of drones and glide bombs sets ambushes, destroys cover, and disrupts Ukrainian logistics. Ukraine faces a double disadvantage of inferior numbers and air superiority, and cannot move air defenses close because drones would destroy them. Limited Ukrainian aircraft prevent effective counterstrikes against Suchoi bombers. The long contact line creates a 20-kilometer "death zone" complicating resupply of ammunition and equipment.
