UK set to rejoin EU's Erasmus scheme from 2027
"Britain is set to rejoin the European Union's Erasmus student exchange programme, which it left almost five years ago following Brexit, UK media reported late Tuesday. London could make the announcement -- part of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer's much-touted "reset" with the bloc -- as early as Wednesday, newspapers the Times and the Guardian reported. The deal would pave the way for British students to participate in the scheme from January 2027, according to the two papers and the BBC."
"The Guardian reported that British students would be able to participate in vocational training placements as well as university-based study exchanges under the Erasmus scheme. The Times said that the EU had offered the UK government a 30 percent reduction in fees for the first year of membership. A government spokesperson reiterated the administration's stance of "not commenting on ongoing talks"."
Britain will rejoin the EU Erasmus student exchange programme, enabling UK students to take part in exchanges and vocational placements from January 2027. The UK had participated in Erasmus since 1987 and left the scheme at the start of 2021 after Brexit, prompting concern among students and higher education bodies. Work towards rejoining was included in Starmer's post-Brexit reset deal with Brussels agreed at a summit in May. The arrangement covers university study exchanges and vocational training placements, with the EU offering a 30 percent fee reduction for the first year of UK membership. Universities and the Liberal Democrats welcomed the development, and the EU seeks a wider youth mobility scheme for 18- to 30-year-olds.
