"Britain is set to rejoin the European Union's Erasmus student exchange programme, which it left almost five years ago following Brexit, UK media reported late Tuesday. London could make the announcement -- part of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer's much-touted "reset" with the bloc -- as early as Wednesday, newspapers the Times and the Guardian reported. The deal would pave the way for British students to participate in the scheme from January 2027, according to the two papers and the BBC."
"The Guardian reported that British students would be able to participate in vocational training placements as well as university-based study exchanges under the Erasmus scheme. The Times said that the EU had offered the UK government a 30 percent reduction in fees for the first year of membership. A government spokesperson reiterated the administration's stance of "not commenting on ongoing talks"."
Britain plans to rejoin the European Union's Erasmus student exchange programme, with participation set to start in January 2027. The UK had participated in Erasmus since 1987 and left when it exited the EU at the start of 2021, a move that upset students and higher education bodies. Work to rejoin was included in Prime Minister Keir Starmer's post-Brexit reset with the EU agreed at a summit in May. The scheme will cover vocational training placements as well as university exchanges, and the EU reportedly offered a 30 percent fee reduction for the first year. UK universities and the Liberal Democrats welcomed the move, and the EU seeks a wider youth mobility scheme for 18- to 30-year-olds.
