Two young men (18) killed in Donegal crash named locally as community holds vigil
"There are no words that we can come up with that will take away the pain that Daniel and Caoimhin's families feel this evening. The words we speak are the words we speak to God and we pray for their families, we pray for the young man who is seriously ill and his recovery."
"At this early stage for those families, a great darkness has descended upon their lives. We are praying that some glimmers of the light of Christ will work their way into that horrible, horrible experience which no family would ever wish to have."
"Unfortunately, in the last week here in Ireland, so many families have had bereavements as we have had multiple deaths of our roads. We ask that the Lord would bring his light, his peace."
Daniel Cullen and Caoimhin Porter, both 18 years old from Shantallow in Co Derry, were passengers in a vehicle that collided with a lorry on the R236 at St Johnston on Tuesday night. The car's driver, also in his late teens, sustained serious injuries and was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. A memorial mass was held at St Baithin's Church in St Johnston on Wednesday evening. Parish priest Fr Philip Kemmy addressed the congregation, expressing that no words could ease the families' pain and emphasizing prayers for the deceased young men, the hospitalized driver, and his recovery. Candles were lit in remembrance and for the hospitalized youth's healing. Fr Kemmy acknowledged the community's grief and shock, noting the broader tragedy of multiple road deaths across Ireland.
