Tube lifts learn to 'tell on themselves' in new TfL push for reliable step-free travel
"One problem with relying on lifts at railway stations to get around is that they occasionally break down, leaving the station inaccessible. To mitigate that, Transport for London ( TfL) has started adding real-time reporting to its lifts and says it has now upgraded a third of its lifts so they can automatically update journey-planning tools to warn people in advance."
"It's so important that people have access to accurate information when they plan journeys on our network, and that's especially true for those who need step-free access. Real-time updates for out-of-service lifts minimise the chance that people need to change their plans once their journey's begun, and the frustration and inconvenience that can go with that. We're absolutely committed to ensuring that as many people as possible can benefit from public transport and all that London has to offer."
Transport for London has added real-time self-reporting to a third of its lifts so failures automatically update journey-planning tools. Currently 93 lifts at 28 Tube stations self-report as out of service without staff input. The upgrades make apps such as TfL Go and Journey Planner reflect outages faster and help staff respond more quickly. The first phase targets busy central interchange and end-of-line stations, with more than 20 additional upgrades planned by March 2026. A second phase beginning in 2026 will extend upgrades across the wider TfL network.
