Trafalgar Square's Christmas tree chopped down earlier today in an Oslo forest
"The Mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe, and Lord Mayor of Westminister, Paul Dimoldenberg, joined forces and made the first cut into the 20 metres tall Norwegian spruce "Ever Oslo". The symbolic slice dealt with, professional tree surgeons did the rest. A replacement tree is also planted afterwards. And as is also now traditional, slices from the bottom of the tree are presented to the Mayors as keepsakes."
"The tree will be installed in Trafalgar Square, and the tree lighting ceremony, in the Nordic style with long vertical lines of lights, will take place on Thursday 4th December, with events from 5:30pm and the lights switched on at 6pm. The ceremony will include Christmas carols led by the Regent Hall Band of the Salvation Army and a poem to the Christmas tree written and read by children who live in Westminster."
A 20-metre Norwegian spruce named 'Ever Oslo' was felled near Oslo after the Mayor of Oslo and the Lord Mayor of Westminster made the ceremonial first cut. Professional tree surgeons completed the work and a replacement tree will be planted afterwards; slices from the trunk were presented to the mayors as keepsakes. Oslo residents selected 'Ever Oslo' from a shortlist of three. The cutting was delayed when a protestor climbed the tree and unfurled a banner reading 'Keir Starmer Stop Rose Bank Now'. The tree will be installed in Trafalgar Square and lit in Nordic style on 4 December with carols, a children's poem, and musical performances.
