Today in Germany: A roundup of the latest news on Monday
"We will fight resolutely for a genuine shift in migration policy that ensures Germany remains the homeland of the Germans."
"Any belief I have that its youth organisation will be any different in a positive way is practically nonexistent."
"The new organisation is clearly old wine in new bottles."
"It is a breeding ground for right-wing extremists, members of the Identitarian Movement, and Putin supporters, and therefore a danger to our democracy."
The AfD founded a new official youth organisation, Generation Germany, at a founding congress in Giesen. Jean-Pascal Hohm, 28 and from the party's far right, was elected chairman with 90.4 percent of the vote. Hohm pledged to fight for a genuine shift in migration policy to ensure Germany remains the homeland of the Germans. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called the AfD an extremist party and said any belief the youth organisation would be different is practically nonexistent. SPD parliamentary manager Dirk Wiese described the organisation as old wine in new bottles, a breeding ground for right‑wing extremists, Identitarian Movement members and Putin supporters. The congress was delayed over two hours by largely peaceful protests and blockades, with police estimating at least 25,000 protesters.
