Tickets Alert: Tours of the richly decorated Moor Park Mansion
"A private manor house on the outskirts of London, built in its current style 300 years ago, will have a handful of public open days this year to see its richly decorated interior. The house stands on the site of a former 16th-century palace where Catherine of Aragon lived after the annulment of her marriage to Henry VIII. While the current building dates from around 1617, it was extensively remodelled in the 1720s into the grand manor seen today. And "grand" barely does it justice."
"There's plenty of history to absorb, but it's the decoration that steals the show. Several rooms rival the splendour of a French château, with painted staircases, densely ornamented ceilings, and a spectacular entrance hall. In one of the club rooms, mirrored tables are deliberately positioned so you can admire the ceiling artwork reflected back at you while you sip your coffee."
"At £15 per person for a 90-minute guided tour, it's also remarkably good value for such a rare glimpse inside one of the area's most opulent historic interiors. Photography was allowed when I visited. If driving, you can park by the house. If you're coming by public transport, the easiest way I found was to catch a London Underground Metropolitan line train to Moor Park tube station."
Private manor house on London's outskirts dates in current style to around 1617 with an extensive 1720s remodelling. The site previously hosted a 16th-century palace where Catherine of Aragon lived after her marriage to Henry VIII was annulled. Ownership changed many times until Lord Leverhulme purchased the property about a century ago and converted it into a golf clubhouse. The house is normally members-only but opens for a handful of guided public tours run by the Arts Society Moor Park. Several rooms feature lavish decoration—painted staircases, densely ornamented ceilings, mirrored tables, and a spectacular entrance hall. Tours last 90 minutes and cost £15.
