Thousands of locals have left Kyiv amid blackouts
"We had no electricity, no heating and no water, we my husband, my two children and I moved into my parents' dacha [garden house] and my father is also joining us here,"
"Then we have light, water and heat,"
"We get the water from a well. When the generator is running, we have electricity and the pumps are working."
"She charges around 900 hryvnia [equivalent to 18] per day for an adult with three meals. So the very next day, we packed our things and set off."
Russian attacks on Ukraine's power infrastructure have caused widespread outages across Kyiv during sub-zero temperatures. Some 2,600 high-rise buildings were still without heating on January 22. Many residents are leaving the city to secure heat, electricity and water. Anastasia, her husband and two children moved to her parents' dacha with a gas boiler and a diesel generator, using well water and generator-powered pumps for electricity and water. Her husband, an energy engineer, commutes to Kyiv on icy highways, taking up to two hours. Other families are relocating to discounted hotels in western regions, and most schools have extended the winter break.
