This 80-mile Route Is One of the Prettiest Drives in Colorado-With Mountain Views and Charming Towns

The Colorado River Headwaters Byway spans 80 miles, from Highway 34, north of Grand Lake, to State Bridge."

"The route follows the river south, meandering through picturesque Colorado towns such as Grand Lake, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Parshall, and Kremmling. Along the way, you'll drop (or rise) 1,700 feet in total elevation. Given the winter weather in Colorado, it's best driven in either the spring, summer, or early fall. If you start your drive in the northeast, the waterfront town of Grand Lake will be your first stop."

"From there, get ready for all kinds of fishing, canoeing, and rafting opportunities. Shadow Mountain Reservoir, which is connected to Grand Lake, and Lake Granby, in particular, are wonderful for fishing and boating. The latter body of water is just outside the town of Grandby. Make a pitstop here for lunch, or extend your stay overnight in order to enjoy more excellent fishing, weather conditions permitting."

The Colorado River Headwaters Byway received National Scenic Byways recognition in 2005 and covers 80 miles from Highway 34 north of Grand Lake to State Bridge. The drive follows the Colorado River south through towns including Grand Lake, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Parshall, and Kremmling, with about 1,700 feet of total elevation change. Driving without stops typically takes two to three hours, but frequent recreational stops are common. Spring through early fall are the recommended seasons. Grand Lake lies at 8,369 feet, connects to Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Lake Granby, and serves as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and overnight stays.
