"on Monday afternoon when the horse, Anne, fell to the ground twice while pulling a sulky with two passengers. She skidded approximately 40m along the road, sustaining cuts "into the bone" before being whipped and kicked by the riders who then fled, leaving behind the sulky she had been pulling. Anne was later transported to UCD Veterinary Hospital where she collapsed again before being put to sleep due to the extent of her injuries, losing her fully formed foal too."
"Martina Kenny, co-founder of animal charity My Lovely Horse Rescue, described the "horrendous" scene she came upon. "We have video of the skid marks," she said. "Her knees were in a [shocking state] - one of them especially was right into the bone." She continued: "She had four shoes that were odd. One of them was so worn into her hoof. That would have been skidding along anyway, so she would have lost her footing one way or another.""
"Ms Kenny said that videos of the incident - shared with the charity and An Garda Síochána - show two riders hopping off the sulky and beating her while she lay on the cold wet ground before they fled. "We have footage of them whipping and kicking her trying to get her up. They then decided 'Well, let's get something out of this', and they ran up the road with the the sulky trap and hid that in the bushes.""
A horse named Anne collapsed twice on the N4 near Chapelizod while pulling a sulky carrying two passengers. Anne skidded about 40 metres, suffered deep cuts "into the bone," and was whipped and kicked by the riders, who fled and abandoned the sulky. A nearby driver cut the strapping and a vet gave painkillers at the scene. Anne was taken to UCD Veterinary Hospital, collapsed again, and was euthanized because of the severity of her injuries, also losing a fully formed foal. Videos and witness reports show the riders forcing Anne up and later beating her, and Gardai have opened an inquiry.
