'They wanted to go one way and I wanted to go another' - Ronan Collins to leave RTE next week after four decades on the airwaves
"He said: "I'll be doing my last show on RTÉ Gold after almost three years. "Well, in the nature of radio, I've done it now 46 and a half years, I've been on daily radio between 2 FM when I started Radio 2, Radio 1 for all those years, and now nearly three years on RTÉ Gold. And it's time to stop.""
""I couldn't make an arrangement with RTÉ to continue because they wanted to go one way and I wanted to go another. And it was as simple as that. "But I had no complaints and there was no acrimony, no bitterness at all because I've done it and I loved it. "I'll miss DJing, you know, and I'll miss people saying to me, 'I heard you play this, that or the other', you know?""
Collins will broadcast his last show on RTÉ Gold next Tuesday after almost three years on the station. He has worked in radio for 46 and a half years and has been on daily radio across Radio 2, Radio 1 and RTÉ Gold. He signed off from RTÉ Radio 1 in 2022, with Louise Duffy taking his slot. He said he could not reach an arrangement with RTÉ because the organisation wanted to go one way and he wanted another, but that there was no acrimony. He currently hosted a weekday 10am–1pm show and The Collins Collection on bank holidays. He began in showbands, has fronted the National Lottery programme and has been a national airwaves presence since 1985. RTÉ Radio 1 recently underwent its biggest schedule shake-up since 1999.
