The Irish Independent's View: Yet another housing plan, but this time it is imperative that action must follow
"Supply and delivery. At this point that is all that matters to a public grown sceptical from disappointment at past failures. Remember, a plan without action is only a speech. The latest promise is to provide 300,000 homes, including 90,000 starter homes, over the next six years. Given the Government has been missing its own targets, and been warned by its advisers that there will be a shortage for another 15 years, the public is entitled to know how such numbers are to be achieved."
"Not just the credibility, but the survival of the Coalition depends on the answer. The opposition wasted no time in attacking the plan, based on leaks from the report. The Social Democrats' Rory Hearne said the Government was tinkering with the issue. Around 30,000 affordable homes would need to be delivered per year "at a minimum". But Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it represented the "most unprecedented investment in housing ever". No one is doubting that. Revenue is at record levels. But in a dysfunctional market, where the Government is a key player in buying up homes - actively competing with workers - a transformational shift is needed."
The government promises 300,000 homes, including 90,000 starter homes, over six years while having missed past targets and facing adviser warnings of a 15-year shortage. Opposition voices call for at least 30,000 affordable homes per year and stronger renter protections. The Taoiseach describes the plan as unprecedented investment, but market dysfunction and government competition in buying homes undermine outcomes. Sinn Féin demands higher funding, increased social and affordable housing targets, and clear measurable goals to end long-term homelessness by 2030. Even meeting prior promises would still fall short of an estimated 50,000–60,000 annual need.
