"The days of the really big-money signings are gone. When he rejoined RTÉ from Today FM more than a decade ago, Ray D'Arcy's salary came up in the Dáil. The then taoiseach Enda Kenny was asked about indications that "a DJ returning to RTÉ is going to be paid €500,000 per year". D'Arcy's salary was slightly less than speculated upon in the Dáil. The RTÉ top 10 earners list put him on a salary of €450,000 at the time."
"The policy of mainly letting the big names go comes as the broadcaster is in the midst of a redundancy programme, on foot of the financial crisis caused by the series of scandals of two summers ago. The Government has weighed in with a bailout of €725m. But reforms in the organisation have yet to convince the public. Sales of television licences have fallen by three in 10 in the last four years."

Ray D'Arcy's pay fell from an earlier €450,000 to €250,000 and RTÉ has decided not to renew his salary. The broadcaster is implementing a redundancy programme driven by a financial crisis linked to scandals two summers ago. The Government provided a €725m bailout, yet organisational reforms have not restored public confidence. Television-licence sales have fallen by about three in 10 over four years and licence-fee enforcement and convictions for non-payment have declined sharply.
