The IOC is barring this Ukrainian athlete over messaging on his helmet at the Milan Cortina Games
"inconsistent with the Olympic Charter and Guidelines on Athlete Expression."
"I believe, deeply, the IBSF and IOC understand that I'm not violating any rules," Heraskevych said. "Also, I would say (it's) painful that it really looks like discrimination because many athletes already were expressing themselves. . . . They didn't face the same things. So, suddenly, just the Ukrainian athlete in this Olympic Games will be disqualified for the helmet."
"We didn't find common ground in this regard," Heraskevych said."
Vladyslav Heraskevych was barred roughly 45 minutes before competition after refusing an IOC request to not wear a helmet honoring more than 20 athletes and coaches killed in Ukraine's war with Russia. The IBSF deemed the helmet decision inconsistent with Olympic Charter guidelines on athlete expression. The IOC allowed the helmet in training but asked for a different race helmet and offered concessions such as a black armband or permitting display off the ice. Heraskevych called the treatment discriminatory and said he was not violating rules. IOC President Kirsty Coventry met him but could not reach agreement; the decision was made with regret.
